Defining Style - styling advice you can trust

Whats in this Issue

In my hurry to send out my newsletter Thursday night, I misplaced the article on 'Mad Men'. Many thanks to one of my regular male readers, in keeping me on my toes.

Read my blog 'men's hats are back' as guys become more edgy in their dressing.

'Mad Men' Retro Styled Fashion

The Madison Avenue ad agency in the 1960's has captivated the fashion industry. Women thanks to 'Mad Men' have already squeezed their curves into body hugging dresses, pencil skirts and fitted sweaters. Now men are following suit with slim fitting suits, white shirts, pocket squares and skinny ties with tie bars. These new looks are seen on the runway, TV and in the streets.

Rules to follow

  • Team with a slim suit, starched white shirt and ensure your suit lapels are the same width as your tie.
  • Wear with a suit, sports jacket, or shirt and dark jeans.
  • Avoid the very skinny ties of the 80's especially if they are leather.

Inappropriate Dressing - 'Mad' Men Magazine

When men reach a certain age there are simple rules they need to follow for casual dress in summer. Guys go crazy with slogan t-shirts, florid shirts and ill fitting shorts. Some tips to follow (your girlfriend will approve).

Avoid the following:

  • Baseball caps, low slung denim and rock'n'roll t-shirts
  • Matchy matchy tracksuits like John Howard
  • Clothes too tight even if you're body is great
  • Unironed and holey t-shirts
  • Speedos.

Try instead:

  • Classic pieces
  • Well tailored clothes
  • Polo shirts instead of t-shirts
  • Tailored shorts that don't fall down
  • Well cut jeans.
